Los Lonely Boys ndash; Forgiven

This is a band that first found out about when their first album was released and I started hearing their biggest hit to date, Heaven on the radio. To best describe LLB I would call them a mash up of two other artists that I enjoy. They take the Texas blues of Stevie Ray Vaughan and mix in the Latin grooves and style of Carlos Santana. The self describe their music as Texicana Rock N Roll. I think itrsquo;s a fairly accurate term. This band absolutely jams and I really enjoy their sound.

The album Forgiven is their latest release. This is actually my first listen to the album. Itrsquo;s got some of the softer songs that you expect from LLB with their shared vocals and it also some good rockers mixed in. This is a very good album and will definitely get some subsequent listens.

Luther Allison ndash; Live In Chicago

If yoursquo;re not familiar with Luther Allison, you need to be. I discovered the talent that is Luther Allison a few years ago while browsing through CDs at a Barnes Noble. They had a live cd of his that had a lot of blues standards on it, so I took it to one of the listening posts in the store and tried it out. Needless to say I was blown away by it and immediately purchased that album. After listening to that one I sought out more albums by Luther and bought whatever I could find by this talented bluesman, including this album. Like a lot of bluesman that I have come to like I discovered Luther a little late. The unfortunate part of this is that Luther passed away from cancer in 1997. The good news was that he was very prolific during his career and has several great albums. His studio albums were actually very good and his live performances were legendary.

Unlike the first live album (Live in Montreux) that I purchased, the Live in Chicago 2 disc set features more music that Luther wrote than the blues standards that are featured on the Montreux release. Favorite tracks on this release are Cherry Red Wine and Bad Love. Both of these songs feature long blues jams and Allisonrsquo;s strong, emotive vocals up front. When he does bring out a blues standard like It Hurts Me Too he plays the heck out of it and does not hold back. One feature that is great on this recording is the classic inclusion of a horn section with his band. The Memphis horns perform on this recording and absolutely add some great substance to the music. Luther was a true master of the blues and this recording exemplifies that.

Tomorrow will include the last letter "L" artist Lynyrd Skynyrd and a tasty live album of music from them. Iapos;ve started listening to it now but wonapos;t finish it until tomorrow morning. Then we head into the letter M and discuss some great albums from some wonderful artists.
